Monicap™

Pilot project initiated in 1988 and whose results have been revolutionising the monitoring and control techniques of the fishing activities in a world level. MONICAP is a monitoring system for the inspection of fishing activities using GPS (Global Positioning System) for the geographical positioning and Inmarsat C for satellite communications between the vessels and a control centre. The MONICAP system was industrialised and is installed presently (or in installation phase) in more than 800 fishing ships that operate under control of Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland and Angola. For each one of these countries was also developed and supplied a Control Centre, which allows the geographical visualisation of the ships and control of its movements and activities.
MONICAP is a system with "black box" characteristics that allows the monitoring of several parameters (e.g., position and speed) of the ships where the MONICAP box is installed.

The MONICAP box uses a satellite positioning system together with communications technology for continuous and automatically transmission of the position, heading and speed of the ship for a control centre. In this Control Centre, and using computer and information technologies, it is possible to monitor in real time the activity of a fleet.

The use of satellite based communications, besides turning the system more reliable and providing world level coverage (continuous and global), also allows the send and receive of messages between ships and any reception point, as well as the shipping of faxes from ship to earth independently of the position of the vessel.

The capacities of communication provided by the system go well beyond the basic system of monitoring i.e.:

  • The inspection and protection of the fishing activities.
  • Control of maritime traffic.
  • Acquisition, reception and transmission of meteorological data.
  • Fast and precise location of ships in danger.

The potential final users of the MONICAP system are responsible entities for the monitoring and inspection of the fishing activities such an as the Navy, Coastal Guard, Port Authorities, Marinas, Shipowners and research institutes.
