Motorway
Emergency Communication Systems
In 1986, INEM
(Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica - National
Institute of Medical Emergency) together with INESC/INOV, developed
a communications system emergency situations for the Portuguese
motorways.
In 1988, a new
completely digital modular version was developed, leading to performance
improvements, under the name SIT (Sistema Integrado de Telecomunicações
- Integrated Telecommunications System) later registered under the
name TELIS.
The product
and knowledge were transferred to a company, SETCOM, which nowadays
markets the system.
The Portuguese Motorway Operator (Brisa) uses TELIS in several main
routes.
