Areas of activity
|
INOV is a private
nonprofit institution, dedicated to applied research, development
and technology transfer, acting in the area of Information
Technology, Electronics and Telecommunications (ITEC).
It has an agile and flexible internal organisation, a staff
of highly skilled employees and a technological infrastructure
capable of meeting the demands and needs of the contemporary
industry via effective processes of technology development,
transfer and assimilation.
INOV plays an active role in the
socioeconomic development of the country. This leading position
is widely recognised by the Business World due to evidently
successful results in the technology transfer servicing
for existing or emerging companies. INOV treats each customer
as a partner for the development of innovative technology.

Competences
|
The core INOV competences can be subdivided into four
strategic areas:

- Communications;
- Monitoring, Navigation and Control;
- Information Technologies;
- Electronics.
|
The activities in each strategic
area are optimised and distributed, within the framework of
clearly designed and established business strategy, between
various units of technological development, each having crucial
amount of technological, human and physical resources.
The internal units are organised in relation to the markets
and technologies, evolving in accordance with their requirements
and changes, and are supported by other units that take responsibility
for creating instruments of cohesion and exploit synergies
that allow offering complete integrated systems following
the one-stop-shopping principle.
This principle is dissimilated by various INOV poles and nuclei
dispersed across the country, created at the Universities
and/or technology centres with the aim to strengthen the local
ties and facilitate the efforts for capturing the interest
of companies in formation of cooperation mechanisms, participating
in joint projects and other activities in the area of forefront
technologies.

Communications
|
In this area we developed medium- and large-scale projects
for enterprises – national and international leaders in
telecommunications, which enabled INOV to gain and assimilate
technology in the area of dedicated voice and data communications,
Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN), digital multiplexers
and concentrators for commutation centres, wireless local area
networks, mobile GSM/GPRS, UMTS networks, as well as in the
domain of broadband and IP communications and QoS technologies.
In this area we also accumulated high skills in speech technology,
developing innovative systems with particular emphasis in the
Portuguese language applications.

Monitoring, Navigation and Control
|
Within the
area of Monitoring, Navigation and Control should be emphasised
four main sectors of INOV activity: Technologies for Health
Services, Navigation Systems, Forest Surveillance and Monitoring
of Fishing Activities.
The level our technological skills in the area is represented
by expertise in the design, development, testing and support
of manufacturing complex instruments and systems, usually
composed of terminal equipment (electronics and firmware)
and Control Centres dedicated to monitoring and remote control
of activities, hardware, etc.

Information Technologies
|
In the area of Information Technologies the INOV activity
and expertise are developed within the framework of the following
directions: Business and Organisational Engineering, Information
System Architecture, Configuration Management and Software Testing,
and System Integration and Computational Prototyping. Notably,
a lot of efforts invested in establishing, using and applying
Open Source Software (OSS) technologies, systems and tools,
as well as in adapting them to specific needs and requirements.
In this area INOV has been developing a number of projects devoted
to specific solutions, research and consultancy.

Electronics
|
The area of electronics has been developed in
INOV primarily as a tool of internal support, assimilating know-how
that includes embedded systems, product engineering, digital
and analog electronics, fast electronics and fault tolerant
systems.
