SOS Communications Posts

In 1986, INEM (National Institute for Medical Emergency) together with INOV (at that time, INESC), developed an emergency communications system for Portuguese motorways.

In 1988, a new, completely digital modular version named SIT (Sistema Integrado de Telecomunicações - Integrated Telecommunications System) was developed, leading to performance improvements. Later it was registered under the name TELIS.

The product and associated technologies have been transferred to a company SETCOM, which presently commercialise the system.

The Portuguese motorway operator Brisa uses TELIS in several main routes.
Main technical characteristics:

Operator:
  • Graphical interface providing detailed and high-quality information.
  • Permanent recording of data and dialogues.
  • Intelligent system re-configuration via network.

User:
  • High reliability and robustness.
  • Digital communication of voice and data, short response time.
  • Synthesised voice system for providing client information and reporting the state of communications.
  • Detection and diagnostics of damage or violation.
