The European project IMPAST (Improving Fisheries Monitoring through Integrating Passive and Active Satellite-Based Technologies), supported by the IST (Information Society Technologies) Programme, aims at use of RADARSAT images (ScanSAR N beam mode) as complementary information to the position reports transmitted by mobile VMS units. Comparing the target signatures extracted from the satellite radar images (SAR) with the existing position reports in the Control Centre, it is possible to identify new targets.
