Researchers from INOV, João Lima, Filipe Apolinário, Nelson Escravana and Carlos Ribeiro, presented the article “BP-IDS: Using Business Process Specification to Leverage Intrusion Detection in Critical Infrastructures”, that won the prize for “Best Industry Paper” in 2020 IEEE 31st International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2020) conference, on 14th October.

The article presents the Business Process Intrusion Detection System (BP-IDS), developed at INOV with the objective of protecting the essential assets of organisations, especially when refering to critical infrastructures.

Aimed at infrastructures such as energy networks, transport operators and industrial facilities, BP-IDS tracks the execution of business processes through sensors installed in the organization’s Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) structure, comparing it, in time -real, with the specifications of the processes that support business specified in the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN).

Mário Nunes e Augusto Casaca (INOV), Rita Alves, Pedro Póvoa and José Botelho (Águas do Tejo Atlântico) sign the chapter Real Time Management of Energy Consumption in Water Resources Recovery Facilities with IoT Technologies in the book Internet of Things – The Call of the Edge – Everything Intelligent Everywhere, edited by Ovidiu Vermesan and Joël Bacquet and published by River Publishers.

This book provides an overview of the Internet of Things (IoT) – new ideas, concepts, research and innovation to enable the development of IoT technologies in a global context. It is part of a series covering the activities of the Internet of Things European Research Cluster (IERC).

The chapter deals with the management of energy consumption, in real time, in Water Resource Recovery Facilities as a decisive factor in the management of demand for consumption optimization solutions. The authors explore the implementation and development of energy meters designed for specific parameters, according to the processes and equipment characteristic of these facilities, with data transmission to a central platform.

The article highlights the results achieved within the R&D contract between INOV and Águas do Tejo Atlântico.

The ENSURESEC project, coordinated by INOV and with beginning in June, aims to protect the e-commerce system through the development of a an automatic, rigorous, distributed and open source toolkit.

The project integrates inductive (machine learning) with deductive (formal methods) reasoning tools and techniques techniques, so that e-commerce operations are protected by design, as well as continuous monitoring, response, recovery and mitigation measures.

With a focus on the challenges of the European Digital Single Market, the ENSURESEC project develops in three axes:

  • Prevention and Response: security of systems interface and adequate response to affected users and partners
  • Monitoring and mitigation: at application and network levels to increase resilience against known and unknown threats
  • Awareness and training: increase citizens’ awareness of potential security threats in e-commerce systems and ways to avoid them.

ENSURESEC is a project co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program. The project has a global investment of € 9,230,681.25, of which € 7,701,519.75 correspond to European funding. The consortium consists of 22 partners from 14 European countries. More information about the project at www.ensuresec.eu

Kick-off meeting for MED Food TTHubs project https://www.inov.pt/en/kick-off-meeting-for-med-food-tthubs-project/ https://www.inov.pt/en/kick-off-meeting-for-med-food-tthubs-project/#respond Thu, 18 Jun 2020 23:41:02 +0000 https://www.inov.pt/kick-off-meeting-for-med-food-tthubs-project/
The launch meeting of the MED Food TTHubs project took place remotely, on the 4th and 5th May, with the 10 partners that make up the consortium. MED Food TTHubs focuses on offering Mediterranean food products in a safe and sustainable way by supporting transparency in the traceability and authenticity of products. The project aims to implement reliable standardised approaches, along with cutting-edge technologies, to support the implementation of full-path tracing practices across the entire distribution channel. The objective will be achieved through the establishment and operation of seven Trace and Trust Hubs, which will form a permanent transnational network, a one-stop shop for traceability and authenticity of MED food products in each of the following countries: Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan. Med Food TTHubs project focusing on blockchain technology for the food industry https://www.inov.pt/en/med-food-tthubs-project-focusing-on-blockchain-technology-for-the-food-industry/ https://www.inov.pt/en/med-food-tthubs-project-focusing-on-blockchain-technology-for-the-food-industry/#respond Fri, 24 Apr 2020 17:01:00 +0000 https://www.inov.pt/med-food-tthubs-project-focusing-on-blockchain-technology-for-the-food-industry/
The Med Food TTHubs project started in April with the aim of supporting the food industry through the implementation and operation of a transnational network of Trace & Trust Hubs for Mediterranean food products. With the network, the project aims to support the industry by sharing information throughout the entire supply chain, up to the consumer, on a single electronic platform. In this way, consumers will be able to trace the products and verify their authenticity, as well as attesting the certification and quality control processes carried out.

In this project, INOV leads the software design of the electronic platform, carrying out the analysis of requirements for traceability and authenticity, as well as the design and development of an integrated structure, with special focus on the articulation of blockchain technologies to include.

Given the high complexity of value chains in the agrifood sector, their vital importance to society and their growing dependence on the information systems supporting them, their security is a key point. INOV’s contribution in this sector, with application of blockchain technology, can improve information security and has the potential to be adapted to other value chains with similar characteristics.” (Nelson Escravana, Communications and Cybersecurity Director at INOV)

Med Food TTHubs project includes nine partners from seven countries (Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Portugal, Tunisia, Italy and Spain).

This project is part of the PRIMA programme supported by the European Union.

INOV receives funding under the Interface Programme https://www.inov.pt/en/inov-receives-funding-under-the-interface-programme/ https://www.inov.pt/en/inov-receives-funding-under-the-interface-programme/#respond Mon, 07 Jan 2019 16:09:00 +0000 https://www.inov.pt/inov-receives-funding-under-the-interface-programme/

On 19th December, INOV signed a financing contract in the amount of 1 million and 310 thousand euros, under the Interface Programme, for the valorisation of Information, Communications Technologies (ICT) and Electronics in the areas of Circular Economy, Digital Transformation and Energy Efficiency.

The multi-annual financing provided by the Innovation Fund, Technology Transfer and Circular Economy (FITEC), will allow INOV to develop, during the next three years, a Technological Innovation Agenda focusing on Cybersecurity, Communications Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Enterprise Computing , and Cyber-physical Systems and Remote Monitoring. These technologies will be demonstrated with the business fabric “seeking to reinforce the social impact of innovation and maintain the incentive to innovate even in conditions of uncertainty in the economy, aiming also to fill market and system failures in innovation processes”, according to Fernando Moreira, President of INOV.

This structural support will also make it possible to develop sustainability and budget predictability, strengthen collaboration with Higher Education Institutions, increase qualified human resources and increase international collaboration and partnerships.

Having been recognised in 2017 as a Technological Interface Centre in the area of ICT, this funding contributes to reinforcing the institute’s mission of transforming knowledge into technology with value in the innovation chain.

The Interface Programme aims to enable Interface Centres to transfer technology and enhance knowledge, through collaborative relationships between science, technology and the business community and the internationalidation of innovation. The execution of the activity plans of the Interface Centres will be monitored by the National Innovation Agency (ANI).
