The Expanding Horizons of Artificial Intelligence at itSMF HOT

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on the rise, and at the recent itSMF HOT event, INOV took a key role in discussing its growing relevance in today’s world.

Three key factors are driving AI’s prominence: increased computational availability, a growing user base, and improved reliability.

Nelson Escravana, Cybersecurity Director from INOV, shed light on the modern challenges of implementing AI technology, touching upon the enigmatic “black box” issue within AI systems. He then dived into two remarkable research projects undertaken by INOV:

Project IRIS: Artificial Intelligence Threat Reporting and Incident Response System

IRIS sets out to deploy autonomous IoT and AI threat detection, enriched with privacy-based intelligence sharing and advanced data protection. INOV’s role in this project is crucial, as it coordinates the effort, contributing expertise in access control cryptography in distributed and decentralized environments, guaranteeing data protection.

Project STARLIGHT: Sustainable Autonomy and Resilience for LEAs Using Artificial Intelligence against High-Priority Threats

It aims to improve LEAs’ understanding of AI, support legal and ethical values, and strengthen investigative and cybersecurity operations. INOV plays a vital role by protecting AI tools against cybersecurity threats and studying methods to detect adversarial attacks.

Professor Miguel Mira da Silva, Full Professor of Information Systems at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and head of INOV’s “Digital Transformation” research unit, also offered valuable insights into AI’s applications for innovation. He highlighted real-world examples, including technologies like ChatGPT and Midjourney. During the session, he engaged with participants, addressing their questions on how to stay ahead in this rapidly evolving field.

He emphasized that, in today’s tech-driven world, societal inequalities are not only concerning, but also incompatible with our technological capabilities.

INOV was proud to contribute once again to this event, providing valuable insights into the transformative power of AI. The itSMF HOT event offered a platform for thought-provoking discussions on AI’s multifaceted role in innovation, cybersecurity, and beyond. As technology continues to evolve, INOV remains at the forefront, actively shaping the future through cutting-edge research and solutions that harness the full potential of AI.
