On July 4, during the 2024 Science Meeting held at Alfândega do Porto, Professor José Tribolet, founder of INESC, was awarded the Medal of Scientific Merit in a ceremony that honored eight personalities linked to scientific research.
In the thanks he shared with the various institutes, Professor Tribolet said that he accepted this distinction “on behalf of all the researchers and other INESC collaborators who, since 1980, have produced Science, Technology and Advanced Services, making an outstanding contribution to Portugal’s progress, both in the international framework and in the various national contexts of greater relevance”.
In the words of Professor Arlindo Oliveira, INESC’s current President, this medal “recognizes the importance of Professor José Tribolet in the development of science and research in Portugal, from the beginning of the 1980s to the present day, who has contributed greatly to the institution that INESC is today”.
The awards were presented by Madalena Alves and Francisco Santos, President and Vice-President of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), respectively.

- João Rocha, from the University of Cambridge
- José Tribolet, from Instituto Superior Técnico
- Manuel Carrondo, from NOVA University Lisbon
- Maria Manuel Mota, from the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine
- Mónica Bettencourt-Dias, from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência
- António Damásio, from the University of Southern California
INOV and the other INESC institutes had already been in the spotlight during this 2024 Science Meeting, through the discussion on the panel “Intelligent Care: the bridge between AI and Health Systems according to the advances made at INESCs”.
